About Us

The Story of The Good-Black Apparel

In January 2025, when the new administration took office, it didn’t take long for the writing on the wall to show up in black ink. Federal employees started getting shown the door, and one of  the many excuses? DEI. Whole careers are reduced to a talking point, as if diversity itself was the crime. At the same time, the threat of yet another government shutdown loomed heavy, like a storm cloud that wouldn’t pass.

Somewhere in the middle of all that chaos, the idea of The Good-Black was born. At first, it was just a joke. “We won’t get fired. We’re the good Blacks—the ones the administration talks about.” You know the type they mean. The ones allowed to be in the room, as long as we don’t remind anyone why the room needed us in the first place. The ones doing “Black jobs”—or maybe not. Or maybe it depends who’s asking.

But jokes, like seeds, can take root if the soil is heavy enough. Over the next few months, that offhand punchline started to grow. Every headline, every rumor of furlough, every whispered reminder that our work, our livelihoods, our worth could be questioned at any moment—it all fed the idea.

And when that deadline started pressing down—shutdown looking inevitable, jobs hanging by a thread—I knew it was time. Time to stop laughing off the weight of it. Time to take ownership of the joke, flip it, and build something that couldn’t be taken away.

So here we are.
Welcome.
We are:

The Good-Black. (statement):
Not the label they put on us.
The name we chose for ourselves.
Because we are Still here, Still Black, and Still Overqualified.
